Barton, Elizabeth

Barton, Elizabeth
(c. 1506–34)
   Rebel.
Barton was born in Aldington, a country village in Kent. She claimed to have seen the Virgin Mary in visions and she became a nun in a community in nearby Canterbury. Subsequently she felt inspired to denounce King Henry VIII’s divorce of Catherine of Aragon. After an examination by Archbishop cranmer, which may have involved torture, she admitted that her visions were faked and she was executed.
